Pero Antic-Wrong place at the wrong time
by Nathan'ette Burdine: April 15, 2015

Atlanta Hawks player Pero Antic told Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC) that he and fellow teammate Thabo Sefolosha were “in the wrong place at the wrong time” when the New York Police Department’s (NYPD) police officers arrested them last Wednesday outside a nightclub during the early morning hours.

Antic and Sefolosha were leaving a night club when the police arrived on the scene in response to a call about Indian Pacers’ player Chris Copeland being stabbed.

Vivlamore questioned why Antic and Sefolosha were out so late considering the fact that they had a game later that day against the Brooklyn Nets.

Antic said that he was sorry for the bad publicity but that people should not lose sight of the larger issue concerning how he and Sefolosha were treated by the NYPD.

Sefolosha said that he understands the concern, but that the ongoing legal proceedings are preventing him from talking about the issue.

TMZ released a video showing Sefolosha being taken down by at least six police officers. Sefolosha can be heard in the video saying, “relax, relax” before the police took him down and arrested him.

The NYPD police report alleges that Sefolosha didn’t follow the police’s orders to leave the scene and was charged with resisting arrest and interfering with an investigation.

Sefolosha’s ankle was injured during the scuffle with the police. He told Vivlamore that he will be having surgery on his ankle in a couple of days and that the chances of him coming back this season are slim to none.

Vivlamore asked Antic if he and Sefolosha were trying to stop people from taking pictures of Copeland.

Antic responded, “To be honest, no. We didn’t have anything to do with what happened with that. We weren’t together. We didn’t see the guy. Whatever happened, happened way before.”

The National Basketball Association (NBA) and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) said that they are conducting their own investigation.

USA Today quoted the NBPA as saying, “The players union is concerned about the circumstances of Thabo Sefolosha and Pero Antic’s arrest and is doing its own investigation of the situation.”

Mike Bass, who is the executive vice president of communications for the NBA, said the league is working with the Atlanta Hawks and the NYPD in order to gather “more information about the circumstances surrounding Thabo’s arrest.”
